Your social security card confirms that you are legally employed in Germany. You will automatically receive it, when starting an employment.

Social security cards are also beneficial in other ways. For example, if you want to receive social benefits such as unemployment pay, you need to reference the number specified on this card. Should you switch jobs, your new employer will also need your social security number.
